Temporary Fencing Hire Sydney: How Many Panels Do You Actually Need?

You're running a construction, demolition or subdivision site in Sydney and you know you need temporary fencing. But how much? Order too little and you can't secure the site. Order too much and you're paying weekly hire on panels stacked in the corner of the yard. Here's how to figure out the right panel count for your Sydney site, plus the cost model behind it.

The Short Answer

Measure your site perimeter in metres, divide by 2.4 (each fence panel is 2.4m long), add 2–3 panels for gates and adjustments. That's your panel count. For a rough sense-check:

• Standard Sydney residential block (400–600m²): 25–40 panels for a full perimeter fence
• Dual-occ or subdivision block (700–900m²): 40–55 panels
• Small commercial site (1,000–1,500m²): 60–90 panels

Why You Need Temporary Fencing on a Sydney Site

Under the NSW Work Health & Safety Regulation 2017, every construction and demolition site must be secured against unauthorised entry. Council DA conditions almost always require it explicitly. And your public liability insurer will require it — some policies exclude cover for injuries to people who entered an unsecured site.

Beyond the legal side, temporary fencing does three practical jobs:

• Public safety — kids, pedestrians, tradespeople from adjoining sites, delivery drivers. Physical fencing is the only reliable barrier.
• Security — Sydney sites lose tools, copper, generators and materials every week to opportunistic theft. A proper fence line is the cheapest security you'll buy.
• Site definition — clear boundary for your crew, deliveries and the council inspector.

How to Measure Your Site

Method 1: Walk it

Take a wheel or a tape measure and walk the perimeter you need to enclose. Write down each straight run. Add them up. That's your perimeter in metres.

Method 2: Google/Nearmap

For most Sydney sites, Nearmap or Google Maps' measure tool gets you within 5% of reality. Trace the perimeter, note the metres, done. This is what we do at the quote stage when a client sends us the address.

Method 3: The lazy way — send us the address

The Formula

Each standard mesh panel is 2.4m long × 2.1m high. Panel count = perimeter (m) ÷ 2.4, rounded up. Then add:

• +1 panel for a pedestrian gate — swap one panel for a hinged gate panel
• +2 panels for a vehicle gate — a wider drive-through opening
• +2–3 spare panels for offsets, angles and awkward corners

Worked Example — A Standard Parramatta Knockdown Block

500m² block, roughly rectangular, 20m frontage, 25m deep. Perimeter = 20 + 25 + 20 + 25 = 90m. Panel count = 90 ÷ 2.4 = 37.5 → round to 38. Add 1 pedestrian gate, 2 spares. Order: 41 panels.

Weekly hire: 41 panels × ~$10/panel/week = ~$410/week. Six-week knockdown-rebuild demolition + slab period: ~$2,460. Add delivery + install (from $120) + pickup (from $120). Total: usually around $2,700–$3,000.

Common Mistakes That Waste Money

• Fencing off more than you need to — you only need to secure the work area, not the entire block if the back yard is left alone. Every extra 10m of perimeter is 4–5 panels of unnecessary weekly hire.
• Ordering the wrong panel type — 1.1m crowd-control barriers are cheaper but not compliant for construction perimeters. Use 2.1m mesh panels.
• Forgetting shade cloth requirements — many Sydney councils require privacy screen or shade cloth on demolition sites in tight residential streets, particularly for dust control. Factor it in at the quote stage — retrofit later is more expensive.
• Not planning the gate location — gate on the wrong side means daily inconvenience and possible re-installation cost.
• Under-ordering "just to save a bit" — you'll end up with gaps you have to fix with hoarding or ply. More expensive than another 5 panels.

What Affects the Weekly Rate

Panel hire in Sydney typically runs $8–$15 per panel per week depending on:

• Quantity — bigger orders get a lower per-panel rate
• Hire duration — long-term (4+ weeks) rates are lower
• Site access — CBD, high-rise and difficult access sites cost more to install and dismantle
• Add-ons — shade cloth, privacy screen, vehicle gates, hoarding upgrades

Delivery, Install and Pickup

For anything over about 10 panels, have the crew install and dismantle. Panels are heavy — 20kg-plus per panel — and installing 40 of them yourself is a wasted day of your life.
